HOME > 代名詞 > 【第9章 不定代名詞の用法】　9-4 otherとanother   第9章 不定代名詞の用法   9-1 one 　　9-2 one 　　9-3 someとany 　　9-4 otherとanother 　　9-5 eachとevery 　　9-6 bothとall 　　9-7 eitherとneither   9-4　otherとanother あるもの（one、some）に対して、「別の」「他の」の意味を表す語にother(s)、the other(s)、anotherがあります。 (1)　other(s) の用法 otherは「ほかの～」の意味で、つねに次に名詞を伴い、othersは「ほかの人々・物」の意味で、anotherの複数形。 Do you have any other questions? 　（なにかほかにご質問はありませんか） Tokyo Tower is taller than any other building in Japan. 　（東京タワーは日本の他のどんな建物よりも高い） Do to others as you would have others do to you. 　（他人からしてもらいたいことは他人にもしなさい） Others may disagree, but I think it is health to travel occasionally. 　（異論はあるかもしれないが、時々旅に出るのは健康的だと思う） なお、othersは “some～, others〔some〕･･･” の形で、「あるものは～、他の〔ある〕ものは･･･」の意味を表します。 In ancient Egypt some types of rope were made from camel hair, and others were made from twisted grass. 　（ 古代エジプトでは、ロープはラクダの毛で作ったものもあれば、編んだ草で作ったものもあった） (2)　the other(s) の用法 the otherは1つのグループの中で、「残り(の)」「他方(の)」の意味を表し、代名詞（単数）または形容詞として用いられます。 the othersは残りのものが2つ以上ある場合で、代名詞（複数）としてしか用いられません。 The other(s)はoneと相関的に用いて、「一方（前者）は～、他方（後者）は･･･」の形でよく用いられます。 He has two daughters; one is a teacher, and the other (is) a nurse. 　（彼には娘が2人いる。1人は教師でもう1人は看護婦である） Work and play are both necessary to health; the one gives us energy and the other gives us rest. 　（ 働くことと遊ぶことはともに健康に必要である。前者は生気を与え、後者は休息を与える） (3)　anotherの用法 another（＝an other）は「もうひとり(の)」「もうひとつ(の)」の意味で、代名詞のほか形容詞としても用いられます。 One man said “yes”, another said “no”. 　（ひとりは「賛成」と言い、もうひとりは「反対」と言った） Will you〔Won’t you〕have another cup of tea? 　（お茶をもう一杯いかがですか） [注] 以上other(s)、the other(s)、anotherの用法を要約すると、大体次のようになります。 (1) 2つに分け、対比して述べる場合 ○　………… 　one 　　　　　　 ○　………… 　one ●　………… 　the other ●●●●　… 　the others He had a racket in one hand and a ball in the other (hand). 　（彼は一方の手にはラケットを、他方にはボールを持っていた） One of the ten branch offices is in Tokyo.
