2-3-.2 主節と従属節
He came when I was not at home. (彼は私が留守をしているときに来た)
上の文は、He cameとI was not at homeの2つの節がwhenという時を表す接続詞で結ばれた例です。この2つの節は対等の関係ではなく、中心は「彼が来た」という事実であり、「留守中」はその時の状況を言い添えたにすぎません。
このように2つの節が「中心-付属」の関係で結ばれるとき、中心的な働きをになっている節を主節といい、付属的な立場にある節を従属節と呼びます。
